Caches Hidden
- 12th June 2002
- GC6397 - Roaring Down
I use the road that runs along the top of North Downs as a way of
avoiding the M25 some days on my way to work. Recently I stopped
to see whether there was anywhere a cache could be hidden, and
found this place.

- 9th February 2002
- GC3660 - Inbound from Proxima
I've had the idea for this virtual multi-cache for a while, and
surveyed the location before I went to Australia, but the puzzle
took a while to work out. Being virtual, this cache has an on-line
log book, and the only treasure you'll get is the dubious pleasure
of solving the problem.

- 14th January 2002
- GC327A - Old Rough
It was the last day of my holiday, and I still had two fluorescent
green plastic boxes stocked and ready to hide. This park seemed
like a reasonable choice because it is neither manicured garden
nor pristine bush, but does have plenty of paths through it.
Besides, it was a good place to walk the dog. We headed off after
a picnic lunch, and found a suitable spot fairly easily. The dog
enjoyed himself too.

- 7th January 2002
- GC3191 - Grim Jarrah
On our way from Nannup Valley to Australind we took a detour to have
a look at the mine at Greenbushes. Afterwards we were looking for a
picnic spot, and our map suggested there would be one at Grimwade.
The only spot we found at Grimwade seemed a bit grim, so we back-
tracked until we spotted the Bibbulmun Track crossing the road. It
seemed as good a spot as any to stop, so we did. I went for a wander,
and found this hiding place. The cache is another yellow ammo box.

- 5th January 2002
- GC3190 - Willow Giants
I promised I'd try to hide a cache or two while I was on holiday in
Western Australia, so I prepared four boxes, and looked for opportunities.
We were staying at Nannup Valley, so Willow Springs looked like
a reasonable place to start. The Bibbulmun Track passes through
it, and it's not in a national park. We found a spot after having
a picnic lunch, and I came back in the evening to hide the cache.
It's a small ammo box which has been painted yellow.

Travel Bugs
- TB45B - A Wandering Minstrel
This bug is a key-fob with a picture of one of my harps on it. It was
released on December 26th 2001 at GC29E6 "Cache number 12".

- TB455 - Bearly a Minstrel
This bug is a small teddy bearing a badge with a picture of one of my
harps on it. He was released on January 14th 2002 at my cache GC29E6
"Old Rough" (see below).

- TB72D - Wandering Giant
This bug is a key-fob with a picture of a lone bull elephant on it.
It was released at GC5BC3 "The Gatwick Bug Hotel" on 13th June 2002,
and got to GC9F84 "Undercarriage Down", but then fell victim to a
cache vandal in November 2002, and vanished.

- TB36C - Measuring the World
This bug is a key-ring tape-measure I swapped at GCNQ71 "Doris's Bough
Beech Bench Cache", attached a tag, and released, all in one visit.

- TB456 - Woodbridge Tide Mill Bug
This bug is a key-ring from the Woodbridge Tide Mill, and was released
while I was on holiday in Toronto, in GCVTKH K&K squad visiting Njo.

Caches Hunted
- 2nd November 2024
- GCE08B - Savernake Forest
We were out for a walk with friends, and exploring this area for the first time.
The idea I might find a cache or three only occurred to me some little way down
the track, and I only had my phone with me, but it proved up to the task. I took
a bit of a through-the-brambles route rather than looking at the map and walking
the easy way. What with leaf fall and so on, the cache was well hidden and took
a while to find, but I got there in the end. TFTC

and I found three caches along the way. This was the last one, just before we headed home.

close to the horizon. Thanks for the cache, and particularly for the

I've walked past this post countless times without really looking at

charm. I found the cache a few days back, but didn't have anything
to write with, so left it un-touched. I came back a couple of days
ago with a pen, but found the log too damp to write on with it.

Spent a good while looking around GZ for this, but there are a fair
number of potential hiding places matching the clue, a lot of end-of-summer
leaf litter, and though I peered into quite a few likely looking hidey
holes, none of them looked promising enough for me to reach into, what
with the reputation some Aussie wildlife has. Given the ease with which
others have found this, I wonder whether it's gone missing? Thanks, anyway.

- GC2FM1H - The Hussey's Cache
Third time lucky, but even then only with a little encouragement from
someone who knew that it was where I was looking. I have a strong
aversion to reaching deep into holes into which I can't first have a
good look, as I grew up in Africa and I've spent time in Australia, so
for me this somewhat raises the subjective difficulty of this cache.
While searching, I also found quite a few slugs and snails. When I
opened the cache I found some more small slugs inside. Discovered
"Nineball #2".
See "Needs Maintenance" note. ;)
The container has had a hole nibbled in it, so water and slugs
have managed to get in. The slugs have dined out on the log paper.
I dried out the paper and evicted the slugs, but chances are rain
and more slugs will get in before long.

I found myself in the park, ad wandered down to GZ to see whether I'd
have any more luck than last time. However, a pair of canada geese with
a gosling were discouraging visitors from straying anywhere near GZ,
and they've also left their calling cards around the area, which
conspired with the damp weather to make it all a bit less than
pleasant. I think I'll wait til the geese have gone and the weather's
a little less damp for attempt the third...

- GCXTPM - Daniel's Cache
T'was our last day of walking, and this the only cache we passed
near enough to attempt. It wasn't too hard to find once we read
the clue and checked the compass. I was all for heading round the
path to GZAQ "Three Hairpin Bends..." or up the hill to X841
"Hallin Fell", but younger members of the party were hungry and
footsore, so the other caches will have to wait for another time.
This one was a suitable farewell-to-the-Lakes cache. Thanks.

- GC1KVPW - Below the Edges - Red Tarn
The weather forecast had led us to think this day would be our best
chance for a clear view from the to of Helvellyn. Unfortunately the
forecast was over-optimistic, and it turned into a very wet climb.
This cache was a pleasant interlude before the steepest slipperiest
bit of the climb. Thanks.

- GCTEQK - Helvellyn
The weather was fairly unpleasant at the top, with visibility under
a hundred yards, so no fine views for us. It was also surprisingly busy,
so it was difficult to search thoroughly, but a couple of likely hiding
places which seemed to match the clue proved empty. Thanks, anyway.

Took a short detour on our way back up to the hostel after a walk to Aira

Having found the first De La Warr Pavilion cache easily, I went in search

Couldn't spot the cache at GZ. Couldn't see any evidence of fgbar near the
indicated GZ either. Went to a nearby cafe. Refreshed myself and replaced
my GPSRs batteries. Double-checked the co-ordinates too. Then went back

heavier, so called it a day. TFTC. Hope it hasn't gone missing.

spring morning like this morning. A pleasant place for a country walk.
Thanks.
Satellite coverage was a bit spotty, with the accuracy seldom getting
better than thirty feet. When it was showing its best accuracy (about
twenty feet) the GPSr put GZ somewhere near the middle of an open
clearing some fifty or sixty feet up-hill from the main footpath, just
up-hill from some relatively freshly cut stumps. I searched around the
area both sides of the main footpath, but couldn't find the cache.
Went back for a further look this evening, and approached from a
different direction (past the chalk meadow clearing), on the
off-chance that the satellite geometry would be better, but it wasn't.
Watch out for rotten wood and falling branches.

I guess a mild dry Sunday morning isn't a good time to go hunting this
one, even if the pond is almost all mud rather than water and the
canada geese are in hostile mob mode, as the place is still swarming
with children, so it's just not possible to hunt for anything without
being noticed. My GPSr was only giving an accuracy of 30 feet and
there are at least six possible locations matching the hint within
that radius of the end of the bridge. I'll have another hunt if I

Well that was an interesting walk. :) I started from the Sizewell

beach end of the Goose Hill Black Walk. That took me up to the Kenton
Hills, and I was still half a mile or more from the cache. I did get
there eventually, when I found the Sizewell Belts Trail. Foolishly I
hadn't looked at the picture clues, and obviously they weren't on the
printout, so I spent quite a while hunting. GPS coverage under the
trees was erratic, and had just decided to give up and go back for
lunch when I spotted the container. Took the dragon, and left a fuzzy
animal (a stoat, perhaps?) and a couple of keyrings. Completed the

It was a cold November day when I visited this little park. In warmer

It was a cold wet November day. The temperature was just above

conceal the mud, and the weather was definitely keeping the muggles
(except for those with canine companions) indoors. Followed my GPS on
a zig-zag route to the cache, as I think it was having a disagreement
with the trees. The walk back to the car park (thanks for those
co-ordinates) was rather shorter and less muddy with fewer steep

cache location at all, and rather poor satellite geometry as well, so
I'd tried triangulating from three locations where I could see a bit
of sky, but the slope makes triangulating difficult. I took a couple
of falls on the loose surface. I'd humbly suggest the terrain is at
least 3.5 because of the nature of the surface and the steepness of
the slope, whether you tackle it from above or below. Take care with
this one, folks!

bring a bug to release, but this time I just signed the log.

- GC447B - J.A.G.002
Dropped by after visiting Hatchlands Park. The nettles on the path
are growing well, but the bluebells are over. The cache container
was half-full of water. I emptied it, tried to dry the contents out
a bit, and put them all in zip-loc bags so that when the cache fills
with water again they'll stand half a chance. I fear some of the
contents may have suffered from the prolonged soaking though.

- GC5364 - Around the World in 80 Trees
A very pleasant little park, this. I enjoyed wandering around looking
at the trees. The grass has grown up and wasn't at all squashed when
I got there, though it is a bit now, 'cos I sat down in it to look
things over. Took a pair of gel pens and put all the bits in the cache
into zip-loc bags, 'cos I had some spare. I also left a couple of
Australian souvenirs, as I figured they'd feel at home with those
Aussie gum trees nearby.

A mere 26 points for me... Would have done better if I'd realised
what I needed to do with the pictures, and if I could have found
that pub though. Oh, and trying to get it all done inside two hours
left me knackered, but my knee has been much better since... ;)
Cheers :)

- GC408D - Winchester Cachers Meet
Wow! That was a good day out, and I managed to avoid the jams on
the drive home. It was a good place to meet, with lots of space,
even if the staff were slightly overwhelmed by the turn-out initially.
I hope I managed to at least say Hi to everybody. The multi-virtual
cache hunt after lunch nearly did me in. Especially that last climb.
Great fun, though I guess it would have taken me the best part of a
day to do it justice. I got 26 (out of a possible 47?). Many thanks
to jeremyp, El10t, and Tim & June for the organising they did.
Cheers!

- GC30B8 - SP1
I'd heard a bit about this set oc caches in the forest near Basingstoke.
Quite a lot of it was uncomplimentary. I decided I wouldn't mind a walk
round the forest, so set off, armed with some old waypoints and descriptions
but without any of the photographs. The waypoint I had for this cache led
me to a position right next to the main road. I searched for as long as
I could stand the traffic noise and then gave up. It turned out that the
position I had stored 900 ft out. If I'd had the photograph I might have
stood a chance. Not a promising start to the day, cache-wise.

- GC3742 - SP9
The position for this one was spot on, though the cache was buried under
enough leaves that I needed the hint to locate it.
View cache page.
- GC31A8 - SP3
The position I had took me to a position some 150 feet from the cache,
but the hint pinpointed the cache no problem. It wasn't well concealed,
there not being anything non-obvious in the vicinity to hide it in. The
wood ants were also active.

- GC30E3 - SP2
I hunted for a while before giving up. Couldn't make the description and
hint fit the location at all. Not surprising given that the position I
had downloaded was 0.4 miles out...

- GC3525 - SP4
The position I had for this one was very close to the position I had for
SP2. I hunted for a while before giving up. Couldn't make the description
and hint fit the location at all. Not surprising given that the position I
had downloaded was quarter of a mile out...
View cache page.
- GC3527 - SP5
The description was pretty specific, and there was no sign of the landmark
within sight of the position, so I didn't hunt for long. My expectations
were low by this stage. The position I had downloaded was 540 feet out...

- GC352C - SP6
Again no obvious match between location and description. Figured this was
another duff position (it was quarter of a mile out) and set off for the
car-park.

- GC4526 - Battle of Britain
A quick caching trip on a Sunday afternoon, as this one isn't all
that far from home. I'd always wondered exactly where the Kenley
Observatory was though, and I spotted it on my way past the aerodrome.
No gliders today, but lots of folks walking on the airfield. Wasn't
too tricky to find the cache. Just a bit prickly. The brambles will
be fun come summer.

- GC394E - A Harty Meal (N. Kent)
The traffic was Ok on my way in, but by the time I was ready to head on out
the queue for Minster was most of the way back to the lifting bridge.
I decided to head on out, and visit Minster another day.
The pub is still in the throes of major refurbishment, so no chance of refreshment there.
Had a pleasant walk from the pub car park to the cache. Beautiful weather.
The grass had recently been mown. There was a rooster in the churchyard and a
guineafowl in the field, both calling loudly. Quaint. :)

- GC1D33 - Why Wye?
My sister studied at Wye, so I figured I'd go for a walk along from the
Devils Kneading Trough to the Crown for old times sake. They've done a bit
to the Crown in the last 20 years; wired it over and filled it with rubble
for a start. There's also a Millenium monument above it which even quotes
location and altitude. The location was only to the nearest minute, but the
altitude was handy for checking the GPS (assuming they didn't use a GPS to
determine it in the first place). Got a bite to eat at the Devils Kneading
Trough cafe, and took a few pictures. Great views :)
Found the cache ok. The box looked as if it might have been bitten by a dog
at some stage, as the bottom has cracked and the lid has a hole in it, but
the bag it was in seems to have kept the wet out so far, and everything
inside is in plastic bags too.

- GC33C3 - Walk on the Weald Side
This part of the Weald seems to be criss-crossed with footpaths, and
finding the correct one was a bit tricky. They are marked, but some
the markers are worn and faded, and some of the paths head across
ploughed fields. The walk was rather muddy, but pleasant, and I expect
the woods will be good for bluebells in the spring.

- GC1EBC - That Old Chestnut!
Nice lonely-looking spot, given its proximity to the main road to Hastings. :)
I took a direct route through the forest, down vale, over
river, up hill... It was a beautiful clear sunny day. GPS
locked on to 11 birds at the highest point of the route. No
trouble finding the cache. I think it might have become
uncovered? I replaced the bag with one I had in my pocket,
and put the CDs into a re-sealable bag as they don't fit in
the box.

- GC2947 - The cache at Pooh Bridge
Second cache of the day. Once I'd managed to find the car
park, my GPS led me right to the spot. Finding how to get
the cache out involved looking round a bit. :) I was there
about 4:20 pm, and by that time there weren't many visitors
actually at the bridge, but there were some cadets camping
in the field beside the path, and quite a few families with
small children heading back to the car park as I was walking
down to the bridge.
Released my third travel bug

- GC2484 - Under Wheels Over Water
Third cache of the day, after That Old Chestnut and The
Cache at Pooh Bridge, and the sun was setting. Good thing
I'd taken a torch, as I'd not have found it otherwise. The
box seemed to be short of a pencil. Maybe the next visitor
could leave one in it (though it'll need to be cut down a
bit as the box isn't huge). Glorious view of the crescent
moon just after sunset. :)

A pleasant if rather muddy walk on a sunny afternoon. I arrived at the picnic

picnic site are fantastic. I didn't get to the Neolithic monuments though.

- GC3204 - Christmas Crackers??
Close to home, and I had a day off, so I hunted this one first.
Frosty morning (some of the mud was frozen solid) with a clear
sunny sky. Good cache-hunting weather. Found the cache quite easily,
and put the first entry into the log book. Some of the treasures
must have come out of ireally big Xmas crackers!
Traded a picture frame and a puzzle for a small screwdriver.
The water feature is a bit strange. Is there a story behind it?

I finally got back to this one, to finish the hunt I started
almost two months ago. I was looking in the right place last
time, but wouldn't have been able to see the box in the low

little twist. A hungry squirrel has gnawed most of the label
off the small cannister.

- GC18F5 - Bridging the cache
The last day of my holiday, and this one was near, but didn't have
time to attempt the other one in the area as well. Maybe next time.
Three of us (2 adults, 1 child) set off on the hunt, but by the time
we reached the bridge, granny was a bit puffed, and I didn't feel
like pushing the push-chair much further, so I went on alone to the
cache itself. I saw one roo while I was going up the hill. We exchanged
looks and went our separate ways. The hill was steep, and it was a hot
day. I found the cache with no trouble, and left a few foreign coins
in it.

- GC110A - Peters Serpentine Vista
We had spent a week or so in the South West, and stopped off at
Serpentine Falls for a picnic lunch and a quick cache hunt. The
first half of the walk to the location was quite hard for a hot
day, being quite steep. We found the right general area. The views
from the bluff were great. We hunted around for half an hour before
giving up. We did search the rocks pictured in the clue, but we'd
probably have searched them a bit harder if I'd actually remembered
to print out the picture and bring it along. There had been some
heavy rain and lots of leaf-fall recently, so many of the nooks and
crannies had collected leaf-litter, and in the bush one tends to be
a little wary of rummaging through leaf-litter anyway... We figured
we'd given it a good shot. On the walk back we met an echidna crossing
the track. Neither of us had seen a real live echidna in the wild
before, so that more than made up for the disappointment of not
finding the cache.

- GC1B4A - The DNA Experience
Other members of the family were curious what I was up to, so, as
this looked granny, child and hound friendly, we went off together.
Six of us (3 adults, 2 children and a dog) had a pleasant walk &
a picnic by the tower. We found the cache with no trouble, but couldn't
help either of the gnomes on their ways. However, the kids swapped a
keyring & a bouncy-ball for a couple of little animals, and then
we all went to the nearby playground...

- GC29E6 - Cache number 12
For some reason, Boxing Day ended up being quiet, so I set off on
my first hunt Down Under. It was hot, and I ended up walking over
6km. I found the cache at midday. The picture clues were a help.
Saw a couple of roos fairly close, and several more at a distance.
Took a Yowie toy, and left a notepad and my first Travel Bug, "A
Wandering Minstrel". Found, when I got back to the car at Mundaring
Weir, that it had been broken in to while I was away. No damage,
but they stole my lunch and a few other things. Most of the stolen
stuff turned up later in the day, having been dumped by the roadside
in Mundaring itself though.

- GC2AAF - Oh! Deer
Another free Friday, so off I went.
Clear sunny weather meant there was a good view of
the house. Lots of deer. There were also a lot of kids on some
sort of organised cross-country run in the park, so it wasn't
quite as peaceful as it might have been. Put the fourth entry
in the log book, but didn't trade anything.

This cache starts with a hidden map, and when you've found it the fun begins...
Well, I did find all the clues, but I started a bit late in
the day. Met kennamatic who was checking he'd got the right
clues having not found the cache yesterday. Went on a bit of a
wild goose chase on one of the clues because I had a couple of
digits transposed. It was sunset and beginning to rain by the
time I had all the pieces. I think I found the right area, but
my Vista was hopping about a bit. I'm sure I was within 40
feet of the right place (lots of heather and pine trees), but
it was getting rather gloomy, and though I had a good rummage
around, I couldn't find anything looking like a cache....

My first hunt. Had a day off, and it was reasonably dry and sunny, and this
one's nearer me than any others. Spent a while wandering round
the edges of the field, trying to avoid the stuff the cows
leave behind. Had some interesting jitters from my GPS. It
doesn't seem to like wet leaves overhead...
The log book didn't show any entries more recent than September.
